PhotoGrid_1393520083038I suppose this is my equivalent to those stickers people try to make us wear at those events where we typically know nobody and pray somebody is friendly. If you’re like me, you know we only have a few inches of white space and a sharpie to make a first impression. After some minutes of planning the beautiful penning of the letters E-d and even more seconds of such execution, you and I step back, look, inhale, exhale- underwhelmed and unsatisfied.

Introductions are a strange thing. They are the handshake of the First Impression. They often don’t go well and they can often be far too drawn out. If you’re like me, you’re asking yourself why, then, you are drawing it out instead of just introducing yourself like a normal person.

Because.  This is my few inches of white space, this is my sharpie, and I will put way too much time and effort into penning the letters E-d.

Hello, my name is [Ed]. If you’re wondering what the big deal is with me trying to decorate two simple letters, there is none. On it’s own, [Ed] represents next to nothing of significance. But behind two simple letters and behind an insignificant man, there rages a vast ocean of thrilling wonder, there grows a beauty- striking and ageless, a truth like a tree that climbs to the heavens, expands its strong branches over everything in sight, who’s roots run so deep and wide it draws nourishment from untouched waters under the earth. It is a story of love, an act of grace, the substance of faith. It is redemption of the lost, sight to the blind, a breath of life to dried bones. It is Sacrifice for my sin, real righteousness for my rags. It is Jesus.

This sticker finds me technically beginning my journey of becoming a missionary to China. I suppose I have been invited to an event called Ministry in China- and I pretty much know nobody there. But, I will introduce myself to thousands of individuals; and it won’t stop there. If all thousands of people do is meet Ed, they will be sorry because there’s not much here. I will suffer through thousands of introductions to myself because they need what’s behind those two letters. They need to meet the Thrill, the Beauty, the Truth, the Redeemer, the Sight and Life-Giver, the Sacrifice, the Righteousness. They need to behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. They need to meet Him, and Hello, His name is [Jesus].

Step back, look, inhale, exhale- overwhelmed and satisfied.
