9: “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;”
Main Point: Remember what I’ve seen God do and teach others the same things
Moses is retelling more of their history and in it, He tells them to remember what God had done in their lives. They defeated kings, nations, giants, took over land and cities, kept cattle and goods, etc. God had shown HImself in incredible ways to them and shown His power. Moses tells them not to forget these things because it would happen that these mights acts of God would ‘depart from their hearts all the days of their life.’ Such wonderful mind blowing things would depart from their hearts, they would forget about, or stop caring about. That’s why Moses tells them to be careful and guard their should with diligence so as not to forget theses things. Not only were they to remember them for themselves, they were to pass it down to the next generations. The truth and stories of God’s power, mercy, love for them was to pass down from generation to generation. If not, they would begin to worship other gods. If the truths and stories of God would not be remembered and passed along, they would turn away from Him.
I need to remember this. I ought to take time to remember the memorials in my life. I need to know what God has done and constantly be remembering them. I need to be careful to not forget them and guard my soul from getting away from them. It is a natural thing to happen, to forget the mighty power of my God. I don’t want that to happen. I don’t want to turn away from God, and I don’t want those after me to turn away from Him either. I should not just remind myself about what God has done, but pass it along. I should give time in my Sunday School class to share praises and talk about the good things God has done for us. It should always be on my mind and should be passed down to the younger generations.
This shows God’s power, how we experience God’s love and grace. hEre it was battles and miracles, for us, it is the gospel of Jesus Christ. That should always be on our minds, be careful not to forget that. Also, the truth and story of the gospel should be passed down to generation to generation or else they will serve other gods.
