“Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.”

Main Point: Nothing should stand in the way of God

In this chapter, a few different situations are given. Each one has the first party turning to false gods and the second party killing them because of it. The intensity increases as it goes. First is a prophet, next is a family member, then an entire city of their people. Each time, they are commanded to kill the ones that go astray. The one who turn to false gods lead other away from God. Nothing should stand in the way of God and His people. Any opposing force must be done away with, no matter what, no matter who. God is most important.

I need to remember that. Anything that comes between me and my relationship with God should be destroyed. God comes first and is most important. Anything that would steal my attention and affection for Him must not be given the power to do so. The opposing force must be done away with.

False gods of any type keep us from the real God. They keep people from salvation through Jesus and they keep Christians from the intimacy with God that comes from salvation. False gods cannot save, only Jesus Christ can.
