9: “Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.”

Main Point: Build your brother’s name.

This passage is about the custom that when a man would die, his wife would be given to his brother to carry on his family name and build his family even after he was dead. However, there was the possibility that the brother would not want to take her. If this were the case, this verse is what was supposed to happen. The man who did not want build his brother’s house or name was to be disgraced. God wanted his people to selflessly work to help their brethren. If not, it was looked down on in society.

I need to remember this. I should selflessly work to build my brother’s name. Not just my physical brothers, but spiritual especially. In ministry, I should be helping and encouraging them to succeed and be encouraged. I should not look to my selfishness and selfish desires to dictate how I live my life and wether or not I labor for others. Being a servant is part of this. It means working hard for something even though I probably never will get recognized for it or get any thanks or glory for it. My motivation should be to build my fellow brothers, not to glorify myself. It should be to make him look good, not myself.

Jesus gave up his personal liberties to become obedient unto death. He gave of himself to build us up. Who am I to think I am so much better than God that I don’t need to serve others and I don’t need to love them. Jesus died to build me up.
