More examples of God’s choice of blessings that we receive.

Background: Caleb is conquering the land that Joshua said he could have in the previous passage. He gets to this one city and makes an announcement that whoever defeats this city, can marry his daughter. His nephew defeats the city and is given his cousin as a reward (they did stuff like that back then). And this is where the excerpt takes place.

Caleb’s daughter shows us a picture of ourselves in relationship to God. 1) Like she is a child of Caleb, we are children of God. 2) Though she was Caleb’s child, she did not deserve any inheritance and likewise with us being God’s children, that is enough. 3) She was not worthy to ask for a blessing. She was a woman with a husband, double no no. Women didn’t usually recieve inheritances in the first place. If you had a husband, he would do the talking. We are not worthy to ask God for anything. We are the scum of the earth that He died for. 4) She humbly asks by getting off the donkey. If she asked from her seated position on the donkey, it would seem more proud and authoritative. She got off. We should be humble when asking God for blessings knowing that He is in control and doesn’t owe us anything. 5) She recieves more than she asks for. She aksed for springs because the land she was given (already, undersevingly) was a dry land in the south. All she needs is springs in the south. However, Caleb gave her springs in both the south and the north along very fertile ground. The same can be true for us. God can give us less than we ask, exactly what we ask, or more than we ask. It all depends on Him.

While we are not to serve God and therefore expect him to bless us the way we ask, we are to serve God knowing that He is fully in control, doesn’t owe us anything, but loves us more than we can ever imagine. We are already blessed as it is.
